The Islamic design strategies—such as the abstract geometries, complex patterns and arabesques—have shaped and influenced the Afghan past and current culture as well as the Occidental culture, from the architecture to the arts. These strategies and icons are present in my work, both consciously and unconsciously. I am very interested to not only revive the shapes and the images of Afghanistan, but also to offer the opportunity for the traditional skills to survive, express themselves and develop into a contemporary form of artistic expression. - Zolaykha Sherzad
