Malachi Farrell The Duel (You're Next), 2006

Six plastic guns, motors, aluminum, wood, sensor, three sequence programs, sound; Variable dim.

In Malachi Farrell's installation, entitled The Duel (You're Next), six toy guns face one another from the corners and walls of the room. They engage one another in three sequences. The first is a single, raw gunshot. The second is accompanied by cinematic music, and the third, with alien, electronic sounds.   In an effort to explore the various ways in which violence and its image is experienced in our society, Farrell limits the sequences to 15 seconds, evoking both alarms and advertising jingles. The disembodied guns leave the question of who is shooting whom ambiguous, and the three sequences recontextualize and re-imbue with a sense of risk and fear the violence to which we are desensitized through constant exposure in films, cartoons, and video games.
